What is LPG and is it Right for Your Home?

When you live off the grid in Sussex, LPG is usually your best option for heating your home. Luckily, it’s a highly efficient fuel and better alternative to oil, electricity, and solid fuel. So the question is, is it more efficient to switch from natural gas (which most homes run on) to LPG? In this guide, we’ll give you everything you need to know and answer the question of whether LPG is right for your home.

Liquefied Petroleum Gas

What is LPG?

LPG stands for Liquefied Petroleum Gas and is a popular fuel for heat and cookers, boilers, BBQs, and even vehicles. It’s a colourless gas compressed into liquid form and stored in tanks. For homes off the grid, a large tank is installed above ground, usually in the garden near the house, and is piped into the boiler.

It’s highly energy efficient and burns hotter with less energy, making it one of the most eco-friendly options for heating your home.

Pros and cons of LPG

There are a couple of pros and cons of each type of fuel for your home, each of which will determine if LPG is the right choice for you.

Gas line installation

If your home already has a mains gas line, we don’t usually recommend switching to LPG. This is because it is significantly more expensive than natural gas, so will end up raising your heating bills considerably.

However, if you don’t have a gas line, the process of having one installed is extremely time-consuming and very expensive, making LPG better in the long run.

Storage and delivery

LPG requires regular delivery so you don’t run out and you’ll need somewhere to store it. Many homes using LPG have a large tank in their yard that keeps them going for months at a time. Other homes have smaller tanks that need to be changed out more frequently.

Delivery costs are expensive and having to have your tanks regularly changed can become a chore.

High efficiency

The main benefit of LPG is the high efficiency which makes it a better choice than oil if you’re off-grid. It also burns much cleaner, making it much better for the environment than both natural gas and oil.

Even so, LPG isn’t a green fuel and is still relatively bad for the environment. If you’re considering eco alternatives, solar panels, an air source heat pump, or a biomass boiler are better alternatives.
