4 Easy Ways to Save Water (And Money!)
It’s surprising how much water we waste in our homes every day. From washing up to showering and even making a cup of tea, we use so much water that it’s easy to overlook water wastage. But if you’re home has a water meter, you could be wasting money every month without even noticing. Below are four different water wasters in our homes and our tips to help you save water and money – all while doing your part for the environment.
1. Turn off Taps When You’re Not Using Them
Whether it’s letting the tap run when you brush your teeth or accidentally letting the washing up bowl overflow, it’s all too easy to forget to turn the water off. It doesn’t seem like a lot of water is wasted, but this soon adds up. In fact, research by London University shows that we waste 24 litres of water every day when we all leave taps running.
Instead, get into the habit of turning the tap off while you brush your teeth, and only using the minimum of water to wash dishes. This will quickly add up and save money on your water bill.
2. Maintain Your Plumbing
You should keep your plumbing in tip top condition year-round. This not only keeps your heating working optimally and your water pressure as good as it could be, but it also helps you save water.
Each leaking tap losesaround 25 litres of water, which is the equivalent to running a dishwasher. In fact, 460 million litres of water are wasted through leaking taps every year in the UK. That’s the equivalent of 184 Olympic-sized swimming pools.
If you have a dripping tap or slow leak in a pipe in your home, it’s best to call a plumber and get it fixed before it becomes a larger problem.
3. Toilet flush
This isn’t for everyone, but the toilet flush uses a lot of water each time. So if you want to save water, try to avoid flushing after number one. If you have a large family, this can save a significant amount of water each day.
If this doesn’t sound like something you’d like to do, you can also invest in a low flush toilet. This is eco-friendlier and uses less water per flush, saving you money in the long-run.
4, Take Shorter Showers
Do you like spending 15 or 20 minutes in the shower every day? This is likely the biggest waste of water in your household. If you have a partner and/or children, the amount of water getting used up in the shower adds up fast.
It can be difficult putting a time limit on showers, but you’ll see a dramatic difference in your water meter bill.
